Only Iron remains

The Gorger Warren
1st adventure

The players are introduced to the village of Littlejohn & to each other. Our thief ends up setting up an unintentional subplot as he has an affair with an unmarried young lass in this very small community & her father finds out.

The characters find themselves all camped out near each other in the old campground inside the barricade. As the night draws into early pre-dawn morning the characters are awakened by the sounds of nearby screams and combat.

A sizable party of rat-like humanoids have taken out the dogs & sentries and climbed the barricade ignoring the cuts and tears they had to endure to climb over the barbed wire. They have sprung a brutal nighttime raid on the village. The camped traders & outsiders in their tents are closer than the village proper & more vulnerable & the bulk of the raid attacks there. the characters do significant damage despite being caught without their armor. Eventually the remaining ratmen flee taking a few of the dead with them.

Nabiya the archer uses her healing skills to aid the wounded and saves several lives. By dawn it is clear that seven are dead & three missing. The adventurers decide to follow the ratmen’s trail later that morning.

Avoiding a simple deadfall that might have been much harder to spot at night had they followed immediately. They continue on running afoul of the hunting grounds of an giant lizard, after dispatching the aggresive beast the finally come to an odd sight. A ramshackle structure made out of the ruins of dozens of residential homes torn apart & crudely rebuilt into a wood &^ mud daub structure like a wide artificial hill covering about two residential blocks.

The spot a group of concealed guards watching over an old garage door blocking the entrance to the warren. The thief sneaks behind and slits one guard’s throat as the archer buriesa a shaft in another. The remaining two are taken in the weaponmaster’s charge.

They made their way through a maze of narrow oddly shaped tunnels killing most of the ratmen. At the end they faced two difficult battles as they faced the largest group of ratmen yet and then had little time to recover before facing the ratmen’s leader. An Enormously obese & just plain enormous albino ratman wielding a giant greataxe with brutal speed and power. The ratman cursed them all in broken english consigning them all to the guts of “The Gorger” as he attacked. Kale the weaponmaster was badly injured but survived that battle. The room in which the leader was found was clearly a temple or shrine to this “Gorger” displayed in paintings & crude idols as an enormous albino rat large enough to have humans hurled into its maw. There was a little moping up to do on the way out, but no serious resistance. While some ratmen out on patrol may have survived, none inside the warren did.

The group returned to a thankfull village, though a certain agry father had to be restrained and mollified with the party’s promise that the potential father would not be allowed to leave until it was certain whether his daughter was pregnant or not

Campaign Introduction

This is my new Iron Heroes campaign. Set a little under 100 years in the future. The setting is post-apocalyptic but less blasted wasteland than most such settings. The nuclear exchange of WW3 was quite limited and much of what was launched was stopped by the missile defense systems no one wanted to admit they had. The real disaster was when a desperate Japan opened Pandora’s box in hopes of preventing the Chinese from overrunning them. They released unfinished & insufficiently tested nanomachines into the skies & waters surrounding the Japanese islands. These devices were designed to stop a modern technological armed force in its tracks with minimal casualties by striping them of their technology. Electronics and complex mechanical devices were fused, leaving them piles of worthless junk. Explosives, propellants, even fuels were altered at the molecular level to render them inert and useless. They were meant to form a sort of anti-technology moat around Japan that would stop any modern plane, boat, sub or missile aimed their way. Unfortunately the safeguards meant to control them were insufficiently tested under real world conditions. They failed, catastrophically. The naobots replicated endlessly and at an exponential rate. Within three short days every piece of electronics, every gun, ,every car, every airplane, computer, and pacemaker failed. On March 12th 2019 the lights went out, forever. Hundreds of millions died died within these first few days as planes fell from the sky like badly made toy gliders, life support systems, pacemakers, & other essential medical equipment failed. Cars skidded to halts or careened out of control flinging their passengers to gruesome ends. But this was only a prelude. Over much of the earth man had lost touch with his primitive self. Few were prepared to stand against the coming chaos. When the lights went out mankind did its damndest to commit racial suicide. Without phones & modern transportation nations ceased to exist. Police and soldiers without guns might as well have thrown themselves into a meat grinder as stand against the mob. Some did, some ran, some joined the frenzy. Brother turned on brother, children and the elderly were victimized or abandoned. It was like technology had become the single pin holding mankind out of chaos and without it savagery reigned. But even madness dies of old age. In time things settled …somewhat.Rage and fear eclipsed by the needs of survival. Survival was hard thing indeed. At first many tried to survive by raiding and scrounging preserved food. An excellent idea save that it was shared by billions. The shelves of abandoned stores now lie empty. To find a lost intact can of creamed corn would now be quite the rare treasure. And when the canned goods were gone what was left. In the countryside many tried to recover ancient ways of growing, planting, and harvesting. Success was far from universal. But it was these new farms and the communities which formed around them that came that truly came to inherit the earth the city dwellers dwindle in numbers. though now animals driven out or caged, as well as those which had simply hidden in the city’s long shadows had returned, the way of the street scavenger had become one of greater hardship than ever. of the millions who once bustled through the streets of the world’s great cities only a few hand fulls of pitiful; scavengers and fierce survivors pick carefully through the echoing canyons between glass and concrete mountains. The nanomachines did their job well, far too well. In the space of a mere seven decades the world lost a thousand years, the dark Ages come again. Now as the world wakes again a new day dawns. the rebirth of civilization is struggling to begin. Sword at your side, bow on your back you look into the dawn, past the horizon, the unknown beckons. There is a whole new world to discover
